On May 7th, a collaboration between the Audiovisual Institute and the Dante Alighieri Association of Monaco will screen Mario Monicelli’s masterpiece “I soliti Ignoti” (Big Deal on Madonna Street) at the Théâtre des Variétés. The film will be shown in its original Italian language with French subtitles. This event is part of the “Tout L’Art du Cinéma” film series, dedicated to Italian cinema. “I soliti Ignoti” is a 1958 film featuring an esteemed cast including Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, and Totò. The film, known as “Big Deal on Madonna Street” in English, was nominated for an Oscar in 1959 and won three Nastro d’Argento awards. It is credited with introducing the genre of “commedia all’italiana” to Italy. The story is based on Italo Calvino’s novella “Furto in una pasticceria” (The Theft in a Pastry Shop). “I soliti Ignoti” follows a group of inexperienced thieves whose clumsy exploits create a comedy laced with bitterness. The event is under the High Patronage of H.S.H. the Princess of Hannover and the Embassy of Italy in Monaco. The screening will take place on May 7th at 8:00 pm at the Théâtre des Variétés.
