Monaco, in its role as the headquarters of the Pelagos Sanctuary, recently held a Technical Consultative Commission meeting to review the renewal of its status as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (ASPIM). The international experts, supported by national focal points, evaluated the progress made since the last review in 2019. The results of this review will be presented at the 17th meeting of the ASP/DB Focal Points for Specially Protected Areas of the Barcelona Convention in May 2025. The final decision on the renewal of ASPIM status for the Pelagos Sanctuary will be made at the COP24 of the Barcelona Convention in December 2025. The Pelagos Sanctuary, established in 2001 and dedicated to the protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean, is the only international marine protected area of its kind in the region. Its ASPIM status is renewed every six years.
