Monaco recently participated in the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at UNESCO. Ms. Séverine DUSAINTPERE, Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, represented the Principality of Monaco at the session, which took place in Asunción, Paraguay from December 2 to 7, 2024. The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Paraguay and the Director-General of UNESCO. During the session, 63 new cultural elements were inscribed, bringing the total number to 788. Among the inscriptions were the roofing and ornamental craftsmanship of Parisian workers, as well as the fairground culture of Belgium and France, which highlight the values of cultural diversity and social cohesion. Several multinational files were also inscribed, including “henna: rituals, aesthetics, and social practices” by the United Arab Emirates and 15 other countries. The session also addressed the preservation of intangible cultural heritage in conflict situations, such as the Ukrainian art of decorating eggs and the tradition of soap making in Nablus, Palestine. Monaco, along with 183 other countries, is a party to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and contributes to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund.
