Monaco, the famous principality known for its luxurious lifestyle and stunning views, is not typically associated with wine production. However, in 2013, a unique cuvée called “Nectar de Monaco” was born, despite the absence of vineyards in the area.
To understand the origins of this natural sweet wine, we must look back to the 150th anniversary of the Société des Bains de Mer, during which the event “150 years, 150 wines, 150 days” was organized. As part of this celebration, the “Nectar de Monaco” was produced, with only 150 bottles ever made, now dispersed around the world.
Gennaro Iorio, head sommelier at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, was responsible for gathering the 230 kilograms of grapes needed for the creation of the “Nectar de Monaco.” In a podcast interview with Giulia Testaverde on Radio Monaco, he shares the story behind this prestigious vintage, details the winemaking process, and reveals the locations of the remaining bottles.
While Monaco might not be known for its vineyards, the “Nectar de Monaco” showcases the principality’s ability to produce exceptional and unique products, even in the absence of traditional winemaking infrastructure.
