Marie-Claude Beaud, a prominent figure in the art world, passed away at the age of 78. She served as the director of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco from 2009 to 2021. Beaud made significant contributions to the art scene in France, Luxembourg, and Monaco, earning her the nickname “Grande dame des musées.”
Upon her arrival in Monaco, Beaud’s first task was to open the Villa Paloma, a building from the early 20th century redesigned by architect Alexis Blanchi and museographer Renaud Pierrard. The Villa opened its doors in 2010 and continues to host unique exhibitions.
The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco expressed its sadness in a statement, highlighting Beaud’s ability to challenge artistic conventions and foster novel dialogues and encounters among diverse disciplines within the museum. She also prioritized expanding and diversifying the museum’s audience.
Throughout her remarkable career, Beaud left a lasting impact on the various art institutions she traversed or created, including the museums in Grenoble and Toulon, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Jouy-en-Josas and Paris, the American Center in Paris, the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, the Mudam in Luxembourg, and finally, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco also expressed its condolences, recognizing Beaud’s commitment to art and her significant contributions to the foundation. Beaud will be remembered as a strong and determined woman who dedicated herself to her mission, demonstrated generosity through her actions, and remained loyal and true to herself.
Beaud received numerous prestigious honors throughout her career. She was awarded the title of Chevalière de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1986 by the French Ministry of Culture and became a Chevalière de la Légion d’Honneur in 2015, presented by Fleur Pellerin, the French Minister of Culture and Communication. In 2021, she was honored in Monaco as a Commandeur de l’ordre du Mérite Culturel, a distinction granted by Prince Albert II and presented by Princess Caroline.
