Prince Albert II of Monaco, accompanied by Princess Charlene and their children, Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, recently completed an official visit to Brittany and Normandy. This visit aimed to strengthen the historical ties between the Principality of Monaco and the regions of Manche and Côtes-d’Armor in northern France. The trip was symbolic, tracing back to 1715 when Jacques IV de Matignon married Princess Louise-Hippolyte Grimaldi, becoming Jacques I of Monaco. This union created a strong dynastic bond between the Grimaldi family and the French territory, which is still celebrated by both parties today.
In Matignon, the hometown of the de Matignon family, the Grimaldi family received a warm welcome from the Prefect of Côtes-d’Armor, the Mayor of the city, and numerous citizens. They inaugurated a commemorative plaque to mark this historic visit. A formal ceremony took place at the Rainier III Sports Hall, which was co-financed by Prince Rainier III in the past. This marked the first time that Prince Albert II visited Matignon with his wife and children, adding significance to the event.
The day continued with a private visit to Fort La Latte, the historic residence of the Goyon-Matignon family. Here, a second commemorative plaque was unveiled, sealing this new chapter in the relationship between Monaco and Brittany. In the afternoon, in Plévenon, the Prince and his children participated in the inauguration of a plaque that signifies the city’s inclusion in the Grimaldi Historic Sites Network of Monaco. This initiative aims to enhance and connect places related to the history of the Monegasque dynasty.
The journey continued in Normandy, where Prince Albert II inaugurated the new Médiathèque Grimaldi in Moyon Villages. He was also received at the Maison du Département de la Manche in Saint-Lô, where the launch of the Matignon collection on the website of the Archives départementales de la Manche was made official. This historical collection, originating from the Archives of the Princely Palace of Monaco, further demonstrates the deep and rich ties between the Principality and France, reflected through various cultural, heritage, and institutional projects.
