Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène tenderly inaugurated the new shelter of the Monaco Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) in Peille on Monday, September 16. The project, designed to provide a peaceful environment for abandoned and mistreated animals, represents the principality’s commitment to animal protection. The inauguration took place under a blue sky and breathtaking mountain views, with the presence of the royal couple, Monégasque authorities, and French officials. The ultra-modern refuge, built on a 3,750 square meter plot at an altitude of 700 meters, can accommodate up to 40 dogs and 50 cats. At a cost of €14 million, the project emphasizes landscape integration and the protection of surrounding wildlife. The previous SPA shelter in Èze was no longer suitable due to its outdated condition and proximity to villa constructions. The new refuge in Peille is perfectly integrated into the exceptional natural landscape. It is divided into two kennels for dogs and has specially designed areas for puppies, animals in quarantine, cats, as well as a space for new pets and birds. The six qualified staff members of the refuge ensure the animals’ well-being, dedicating their days to care, rehabilitation, and preparing animals for adoption. The refuge serves several crucial missions, including sheltering abandoned and stray animals from Monaco, caring for animals whose owners are hospitalized or deceased, and assisting animals from shelters. The inauguration in Peille marks the beginning of a new era for the SPA in Monaco, continuing its relentless work to provide a better life for animals in distress.
