The Government of Monaco reaffirmed its support for the activities carried out by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) by signing two voluntary contribution agreements. These agreements demonstrate Monaco’s commitment to upholding the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The contributions from the Principality will support the training of African chemistry researchers in the analysis of biotoxins and the verification missions conducted by OPCW experts in the Syrian Arab Republic. Monaco has been a founding member of the OPCW since 1997, when the Chemical Weapons Convention came into effect. The OPCW’s mandate is to implement the provisions of the Convention, which include the destruction of chemical weapons through a transparent and reliable verification regime, prevention of their re-emergence, and encouragement of international cooperation in the peaceful use of chemistry. In recognition of its significant efforts in eliminating chemical weapons, the OPCW was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013.
