Monaco recently participated in the 17th Conference of the Presidents of the Parliaments of the Small States of Europe, held in Malta. Founded in Monaco in 2006, the conference aims to strengthen the solidarity among the nine small European states. The discussions at this year’s conference focused on three main topics: climate change, multilateralism, and migration.
The President of the National Council, Thomas Brezzo, emphasized the importance of small European states defending their common interests while respecting their specific characteristics. He also highlighted the need for these states to speak with a unified voice in international organizations. Brezzo proposed the creation of new parliamentary synergies, including the development of a common communication system to better represent the interests and peculiarities of smaller states.
In addition to the conference, Monaco held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Andorra and San Marino, two countries currently engaged in negotiations with the European Union. These exchanges allowed the representatives of Monaco to share their experience regarding the sovereignty of member states, particularly in terms of conducting impact studies to assess the economic and social consequences of the agreements under discussion.
To strengthen ties between Monaco and Andorra, Thomas Brezzo and President Carles Enseñat Reig agreed to establish a Monaco-Andorra Friendship Group, which will be formalized in the coming weeks. The next Conference of the Presidents of the Parliaments of the Small States of Europe will take place in Cyprus in 2025.
