Monaco Shows Support for Human Rights and Democracy at the Council of Europe’s 133rd Ministerial Session

Monaco participated in the 133rd Ministerial Session of the Council of Europe, supporting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law while highlighting the role of the European Court of Human Rights, and also commended the launch of the Register of damages caused by the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.

Monaco has participated in the 133rd Ministerial Session of the Council of Europe, which took place in Strasbourg on May 16th and 17th, 2024. During the session, a commemorative ceremony marking the Organization’s 75th anniversary was held at the Strasbourg National Opera.

Mme Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, emphasized Monaco’s support for the defense of the three pillars of the Organization: human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. She also highlighted the central role of the European Court of Human Rights as a “bulwark against the weakening of values promoted by the Council of Europe”.

Berro-Amadeï commended the effective launch of the Register of Damages caused by the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine, to which Monaco has been a member since its creation in May 2023.

Among the topics discussed, the adoption of the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, the first international legal instrument in this field, was noteworthy. The Foreign Ministers also reviewed the implementation of the Reykjavik Declaration, which was adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the member states in May 2023.

The session concluded with the transfer of the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers from Liechtenstein to Lithuania.
