Résumé:
Firefighters in Monaco are receiving sign language training from experts in order to improve communication with deaf and hearing-impaired individuals during emergency situations.

Histoire complète :
Firefighters from Monaco are receiving training in sign language from experts from the Calvados Fire and Rescue Department (SDIS 14). This three-day training program aims to improve communication between firefighters and deaf or hard of hearing victims. The SDIS 14 has been working on the “MC ASSIST” project since 2017 to address the communication challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments during emergencies. Learning basic sign language allows for effective dialogue and helps to alleviate the anxiety experienced by these victims in the critical moments of intervention. In line with Monaco’s commitment to inclusivity, the Monaco Fire and Rescue Corps has partnered with the SDIS 14 to train its personnel in this essential skill. The goal is to create a network of trained individuals who can then educate their colleagues, ensuring better care for victims with hearing disabilities. This initiative aligns with Monaco’s “Handipact” policy, launched in December 2023, which aims to make Monaco a model of excellence in the inclusion of people with disabilities. The training was attended by high-ranking government officials, including the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, and the Delegate for Disability.
