On May 21, 2024, the Principality of Monaco established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nauru, becoming the 159th state to do so. The Republic of Nauru is the smallest republic in the world and a member of the United Nations since 1999. Being close to the equator, it is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as heatwaves and rising sea levels. The permanent representatives of both countries discussed various topics of common interest, including the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, as well as the sharing of benefits for developing countries under the High Seas Agreement.
