Histoire complète :
Monaco will commemorate the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Italian and German occupation during World War II on September 3. This year, the Prince of Monaco has chosen to highlight the significant contribution of the US military during the liberation. The retreat of German troops and the emergence of local resistance groups from hiding were made possible by the advance of the 1st Airborne Task Force, led by General Frederick, who commanded the airborne units in Provence on August 15. In honor of General Frederick, Monaco has funded the construction of a bronze statue, unveiled on August 14 in La Motte, Var. A postage stamp featuring the general was also issued by Monaco on August 15. On September 3, a military ceremony will take place at the Monaco cemetery, attended by Prince Albert II and other high-ranking Monaco officials. Three military detachments from Monaco, France, and the US are expected to pay their respects. In the evening, Prince Albert II will inaugurate an exhibition titled “Monaco Liberated! September 3-December 28, 1944” at the Ministry of State. The exhibition, prepared by various institutions, will be open to the public until January 31, 2025. Throughout the day, the period commemoration committee will organize various activities in Monaco’s streets, including historical reenactments and a memorial tour. Additional events will be held until spring 2025 to celebrate the end of World War II in Europe.
