Histoire complète :
Monaco participated in the 36th session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (CIC-MAB) of UNESCO, held in Agadir, Morocco, from July 1st to 5th, 2024. The session brought together over 270 delegates from 72 countries to work on coordinating biosphere reserves. Discussions focused on action plans related to biodiversity, management, networks, youth participation, and scientific advancement in these areas. UNESCO also approved the designation of 11 new biosphere reserves in 11 countries, including Belgium and Gambia, and two transboundary biosphere reserves. These additions bring the total number of sites within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves to 759, covering approximately 5% of the Earth’s surface. Since 2022, Monaco has been supporting the MAB fellowship program for young researchers, with a specific focus on marine, coastal, and island research. Seven out of the 15 laureates of this session received assistance from Monaco. The support has been renamed as the “Prince Albert I Prize of Monaco for MAB Youth,” honoring Monaco’s commitment to scientific development and the legacy of Prince Albert I in oceanography and science. The next session of MAB will take place during the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou, China, in September 2025. The MAB program, launched by UNESCO in 1971, aims to establish a scientific foundation to improve the relationship between people and their environment, combining natural and social sciences to enhance livelihoods and protect ecosystems. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves, built upon the MAB program, is the largest and oldest collection of natural reserves within the UNESCO system.
