The Prince Albert II Sea Rowing Challenge will take place on November 30th in the bay of Monaco and on December 1st in the port, offering the public the opportunity to witness a race between champions. Within the 24 mixed teams, there will be 110 rowers, including 32 world champions and 24 Olympians, competing for the ultimate victory in the bay and port of Monaco. The men’s singles race will start at 10 am, covering 4km, followed by the mixed doubles at 10:30 am, and then the women’s singles at 11 am. In the early afternoon, the mixed double-four race will begin. In this category, unlike the other three, the teams will have to follow the course in reverse, allowing them to compete on two separate routes.
According to Roland Weill, Vice President of the Société Nautique de Monaco, “The peculiarity is that everything is allowed here. Contact, for example, is not penalized and is considered part of the competition. Additionally, each team is composed of rowers who have chosen to row together. Our competition is comparable to an All-Star Game in basketball, where the best come together. This promotes exchanges and allows for teams of a very high level, even higher than a national team.”
The President of the Société Nautique de Monaco, Mathias Raymond, has highlighted the positive feedback received regarding the introduction of direct elimination duels in the port in 2023. A survey among participants reassured them, with over 80% expressing a desire to see this format renewed. The 500-meter sprint races, which will exclusively take place on Sunday mornings amidst the yachts, have also garnered strong support.
