Full Story:
Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Martin Krebs as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Monaco. At the age of 67, the German Archbishop will serve as the representative of the Holy See to the Principality of Monaco, the second smallest state in the world after the Vatican. Archbishop Krebs has previously held positions as the Apostolic Nuncio in Guinea, Mali, New Zealand, and Uruguay. In Monaco, he will replace Archbishop Antonio Arcari, who will retire in May 2023.
Monaco, along with the Vatican and Malta, is one of the few micro-states that has Catholicism as its state religion. While individuals have the freedom of conscience, approximately 80% of the population in Monaco identifies as Catholic, including the Sovereign Prince himself, who is referred to as “Prince by the Grace of God.” The Prince and Princess of Monaco recently visited the Vatican, marking their fourth visit to meet with Pope Francis.
Archbishop Martin Krebs’ appointment highlights the significant role of the Catholic Church in Monaco and its close relationship with the principality.
