Full Story:
The IMSEE has released the first results of the 2023 Population Census, which now uses a new calculation method based on registries. The introduction of this new method has resulted in a break in the series, making it impossible to compare the results from previous years based on annual updates. With this new calculation method, the number of residents and dwellings, as well as their main characteristics, are now available annually and in a sustainable manner. It allows for the calculation of changes in each of these data every year without the need for a comprehensive survey that was previously conducted every 8 years. Based on the new methodology, the resident population as of December 31, 2023, is 38,367. The population is distributed as follows: Monégasque nationals and births in Monaco are based on the Monaco Town Hall registry; adult foreign residents (data from residence permits) are based on the Public Safety Directorate; and foreign children aged 3-17 attending school in Monaco are based on the National Education, Youth, and Sports Directorate. The remaining population, which includes non-schooled foreign minors aged 3-17 in the Principality and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023, is estimated using data from the 2016 Census. However, this group represents only 2% of the total population. The population has grown by 2.8% compared to the last general census in 2016. Detailed statistics on sex, age distribution, and nationality will be presented by the IMSEE by the end of the first semester of 2024.
