The Prince of Monaco, Prince Albert II, recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of Monaco’s membership in the Council of Europe. Monaco joined the Council of Europe on October 5, 2004, becoming the 46th member state. The Council of Europe, established in 1949 after World War II, is the oldest human rights organization on the continent and is based in Strasbourg. During his visit to the Council of Europe, Prince Albert II met with Secretary General Alain Berset to discuss Monaco’s presidency of the Organization’s Committee of Ministers in 2026. The celebration also included the presence of the Foreign Minister of Lithuania, the current President of the Committee of Ministers, as well as ambassadors and parliamentarians from member countries. In addition to the anniversary ceremony, Prince Albert II unveiled a multimedia exhibition organized by the National Council, the Department of Foreign Relations and Cooperation, the Palace Archives, and the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco. The exhibition, which explores the history of Monaco’s accession to the Council of Europe, will be on display throughout October at the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg and on the website of Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the Council of Europe. Finally, the celebration concluded with the unveiling of a participatory artwork titled “Ode to Freedom” by artist MrOneTeas, which symbolizes the importance of human rights and will be donated to the Council of Europe.
