Full Story:
A book celebrating the 500 years since the pact of loyalty between the Doria family of Dolceacqua and the Grimaldi family of Monaco was recently presented in Ventimiglia. The book, titled “I Doria di Dolceacqua e i Grimaldi di Monaco. Cinquecentenario del patto di fedeltà del 3 novembre 1523,” is a bilingual volume in Italian and French. It explores the history of a relationship that started with subordination but evolved into collaboration and friendship. The presentation took place at the historical Aprosia library in Ventimiglia during the inaugural day of the medieval festival “Agosto Medievale.” The book was published by the International Institute of Ligurian Studies in collaboration with the Municipality of Dolceacqua.

The mayor of Dolceacqua, Fulvio Gazzola, initiated the creation of the book to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the submission pact between the Doria and Grimaldi families. The signing of the loyalty charter on November 5, 1523 temporarily bound the communities of Dolceacqua and Val Nervia to the Principality of Monaco. The book includes a preface signed by Prince Albert II of Monaco. The mayor of Ventimiglia, Flavio Di Muro, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to explore the cultural and historical aspects of the region during the medieval festival.

The mayor of Dolceacqua, Fulvio Gazzola, jokingly suggested erecting a monument in honor of Bartolomeo Doria, who famously killed Luciano Grimaldi—a historical event that served as the origin of the relationship between the two families. Gazzola emphasized the importance of preserving historical facts in the book while maintaining a light and accessible writing style. The book’s content was based on the discovery of a public document in the archives of the Principality of Monaco. Historian and archivist Beatrice Palmero noted that the document represented a significant political initiative by the community of Dolceacqua to seek protection from Monaco, highlighting the reciprocal commitment of both communities.

The book’s curator, Alessandro Carassale, as well as representatives from the Municipality of Monaco, including councilor Jacques Pastor, attended the presentation. The event was also attended by regional councilor Veronica Russo, the president of the Ventimiglia council Roberto Nazzari, and councilor Serena Calcopietro.

Overall, the book serves as a testimony to the historical relationship between the Doria and Grimaldi families and the significance of the loyalty pact that transformed into a collaboration marked by mutual protection and friendship.
